Monday 7th April

Julia Wright “Texture”

Julia told us about her creative journey and what inspires her.

She comes from a creative family and trained at Edinburgh College of Art specialising in Applied Design.  After graduating she took a year out to travel which turned into seven years; spending two in Japan.

She worked at the Craft Centre and Design Gallery part of Leeds City Art Gallery.

She qualified as a High school art teacher and is now teaching sixth form A level Textiles and Art Foundation

The process of making inspires her most, the combination of working with fabric, thread and metal.  She is inspired by shapes, colours, patterns, texture, rusty objects, seed pods and natural forms; clusters of barnacles, tangled roots, lichen.  She loves drawing, photography, sampling and creating sketchbooks.

In the summer holidays this year she will travel to Australia to give talks and run workshops.

We all had a fascinating afternoon hearing about Julia, her work and her inspiration.  Thank you Julia

 Monday 3rd March

Jordan Cunliffe,  'Data Visualisation in Stitch'

In our social time before the business of the meeting starts Kathryn brought two quilts she had made for us to see.

Jordan Cunliffe  ‘Data Visualisation in Stitch’

Jordan uses stitch to record factual data using fine stitches often worked on even weave fabric.  It was whilst doing her degree in design she realised she enjoyed using small stitches.  She uses this technique to represent time, events and words.

During covid ‘lock down’ she recognised  how small her world had become.  She marked all her journeys on a local map – walking the dog, shopping etc.

Her favourite Childhood book was also translated into her data technique,

 also a letter and crossword.

Thank you Jordan for a very interesting afternoon.  We will all be wondering how we can devise our own data techniques.
