Monday 3rd February 2025

Embroidered Book Covers with Sue Bartlett

It was so pleasant to be back in Higham for our first meeting in 2025.  It was lovely to catch up with everyone and find out what they had been making since we last met.

We had a rage of items brought for the display table, two lovely pieces made by Val on a course. Some robins finished after the December meeting and a few 5 inch squares made for our banner to be completed later in this year.

Sales Table

Informal Time

At the start of official meeting Kathryn had some sad news for us – Brenda who had run our sales table for many years since the group was first founded had died only days before our meeting.

We were then shown a beautiful quilt made by Kathryn, such a talented quilter.  The piece of news was the Hall rental would be increasing later this year.

Sue did not really need much introduction she has visited us on a number of occasions and did a workshop for us on making a book quite a number of years ago.  She afraid she would not have much to say – she need not have worried.  Once she started taking all her books out of the boxes she wasn’t lost for words.

There were books with pages – some of the pages dyed with various plant material, some with old printed pages.   In books that have been sewn she likes the binding to be seen. She likes dangly bits and cord or tape round the books holding them together.

There were pages with pockets, zig zag books, some unfolding in lots of different ways.

And so many different covers made in so many different techniques and styles.

This is just a small sample of the books Sue has made.

Members found it hard to draw themselves away from all the ideas and inspiration on display.

Thank you Sue for a most interesting talk about your book making.
