Monday 5th June

Carole's Lace

It was a beautiful sunny day for our June meeting.  Carole had brought some of her lace to show and explain her journey into making lace.

As a child Carol's  eyesight was not good and found it difficult to see but thanks to an Aunt who found out about some treatment.  She was able to have the treatment and fortunately  her eyesight improved.   Growing up she was a great knitter.  Her father made such beautiful embroidery she was never really tempted to try.

One of her friends made bobbin lace and watching it being done she was tempted to try.  Margaret got her started then they heard about a City and Guild Lacemaking course, so they enrolled.   This encouraged her to design as well as make the lace.

The needle lace dragon was made for her part ! City and Guilds, she constructed a paper template first.   Behind is Roses Grow on 'U'

An early piece - Volcano

The owl was inspired by the piece of wood it is perched upon.
In front of the owl are two scarves made from bobbin lace.

A brides bouquet made for her daughter in law by Carole and two friends.
The flowers took a thousand hours to make!

This piece was designed while in Prague on a lace design course.

The piece on the left 'Ruby Mine' was designed for the Lace Guild exhibition 'Let's Celebrate'

Two pieces entered for Lace Guild exhibitions - Let's Celebrate and Discovery.
They were both a joint entry with a small group of friends

Carole finished her story by showing us she can sew as well as make lace!
She brought two corsets she had made.

Thank you Carole for a fascinating afternoon
